There has been a 3% fall in the number of crimes recorded by the police in Scotland in 2016-17, new figures released by Scotland’s Chief Statistician have revealed. Total numbers fell from 246,243 in 2015-16 to 238,651, which is apparently the lowest level recorded since 1974.

In addition to the figures on police recorded crimes and offences, the bulletin also presents official statistics on crimes and offences cleared up by the police in 2016-17. It shows that the clear up rate for all recorded crimes decreased by 1.6% from 51.6% to 50.0%.
